Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research

What is Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research

Grants-in-Aid are awarded to promote creative and pioneering research across a wide spectrum of scientific fields, raging from the humanities and social sciences to the natural sciences. Grants are awarded to projects organized by individual researchers or research groups at Japanese universities or research institutes engaged in basic research, particularly research in critical fields attuned to advanced research trends.

Research goal

The final goal of the research is to create systems that assure safety from the threat of natural and human-made disasters in historical cities.

In the research applied for and selected this time we focus on human-made disaster, make clear the factors in their occurrence and expansion, and conduct research to live with safety in historical cities while making it possible to leave important cultural assets for the next generation. The reason why in this research we focus on human-made disasters is because the 21st Century COE program and “Academic Frontier” Project are already helping along research to protect historical cities from natural disasters, and because we realize that it is difficult to completely maintain the stability of cultural heritage and historical landscapes in historical cities if only covering natural disasters in the process.
